Bar Exam Intelligence
A living guide to the current California General Bar Exam, the subjects tested, how graders read answers, and the question bank every serious candidate should use to track the proposed UBE transition.
Thesis
The General Bar Exam is not a memory contest. It is a two-day performance test of legal analysis, source discipline, judgment under time pressure, and the ability to turn facts into lawyer-like reasoning.
Key takeaways
The current General Bar Exam has three required parts: five one-hour essays, one 90-minute performance test, and the 200-question MBE.
The written exam can test 13 California essay/PT subjects, including Professional Responsibility, Community Property, Remedies, Trusts, and Wills and Succession.
The MBE tests seven NCBE subjects, with 175 scored questions distributed evenly and 25 unscored pretest questions.
Graders reward material fact selection, rule understanding, application, organization, and logical lawyer-like reasoning, not raw memorization alone.
AB 2109 is proposed legislation. It would require California to replace the California Bar Examination with the UBE or a successor exam on January 1, 2029 if enacted as drafted.
Written essays
5 x 60 min
Issue spotting, rules, fact application, counter-analysis, and conclusions across California-tested subjects.
Performance test
90 min
Closed-universe lawyering task using a file, a library, and a task memo.
MBE
200 Qs
175 scored and 25 unscored NCBE questions across seven subjects.
Transition watch
AB 2109
Proposed January 1, 2029 UBE replacement date if the bill becomes law as drafted.
The frame
A candidate who only memorizes rules is training for the wrong event. The current California General Bar Exam asks whether a person can perform legal reasoning under pressure: identify the issue, state the governing rule, choose material facts, apply those facts in a lawyer-like sequence, and produce a usable conclusion.
That is why The VR School of Law treats the exam as an operating system. Essays, MBE questions, and performance tests are not separate silos. They are different measurement tools for the same core skill: disciplined judgment.
Every answer must show its work. If a sentence jumps from rule to conclusion without a fact bridge, the tutor flags it as a reasoning failure before it flags it as a writing issue.
Current posture
As of July 1, 2026, the official State Bar page identifies the July 2026 California Bar Exam as a two-day, in-person exam on Tuesday, July 28 and Wednesday, July 29, 2026. The State Bar says ExamSoft will be used for written responses on personal laptops and the MBE will be answered on Scantron sheets.
The same official page states that July 2026 results are scheduled for release through the Applicant Portal on November 6, 2026. Candidates should always confirm details in the Applicant Portal and on the State Bar site because dates, locations, filing rules, and delivery logistics can change.
Written exam
The State Bar's scope page says the written portion features five one-hour essay questions and one 90-minute performance test. The written day is typically structured as three essays in the morning, then two essays plus the performance test in the afternoon.
Essay and performance test questions may involve Business Associations, Civil Procedure, Community Property, Constitutional Law, Contracts, Criminal Law and Procedure, Evidence, Professional Responsibility, Real Property, Remedies, Torts, Trusts, and Wills and Succession.
Professional Responsibility has special gravity because it can appear in California essay testing and the MPRE remains a separate admission requirement.
MBE
California uses the MBE for the multiple-choice portion of the current General Bar Exam. NCBE describes the MBE as 200 multiple-choice questions, divided into morning and afternoon sessions of 100 questions each.
NCBE states that 175 questions are scored and 25 are unscored pretest questions. The scored questions are distributed evenly across Civil Procedure, Constitutional Law, Contracts, Criminal Law and Procedure, Evidence, Real Property, and Torts.
Scoring
The State Bar's grading page is blunt in substance: essay answers are expected to analyze facts, distinguish material from immaterial facts, identify the controlling law and fact issues, understand legal principles and their limits, apply law to facts, and reason in a logical lawyer-like manner. It also warns candidates not to merely show remembered principles, but to show proficiency using them.
Performance test answers are graded for compliance with instructions, content, thoroughness, and organization. That means the first five minutes reading the task memo are not warm-up; they are the command center.
Written answers receive raw scores in five-point increments on a 40 to 100 scale. The current passing total scaled score is 1390 out of 2000. Near-pass answers enter a reread process under the State Bar's published grading system.
Legislation watch
AB 2109, introduced by Assembly Member Dixon in the 2025-26 Regular Session and amended in Assembly on March 17, 2026, would add Business and Professions Code Section 6046.9. As drafted, the bill would require the examining committee on January 1, 2029 to replace the California Bar Examination with the Uniform Bar Examination created by NCBE or any successor or replacement exam.
The bill status page reviewed for this article showed AB 2109 had passed the Assembly and moved to the Senate process. That status matters, but it is not the same as final enactment or implementation guidance. The correct student posture is to track the bill, track State Bar implementation, and keep training for the exam currently assigned to the candidate's sitting.
Every legislative update should generate new questions. What changed? Who is affected? What date controls? What exam component changes? What prep strategy is now wrong? What official source confirms the answer?
The VR School method
Most exam pages stop after stating the format. This page is built to become a living intelligence layer. Every source update produces a new question bank entry. Every bill movement produces a transition question. Every State Bar bulletin produces a prep-action question.
That is how SofAI stays useful. It does not merely summarize the law school internet. It turns official change into retrieval-ready questions, student drills, and tutoring moves.
Living question bank
This bank is built for SofAI quizzes, spaced repetition, legislative tracking, and bar-prep check-ins. Each question is designed to become a short answer, essay paragraph, MBE explanation, or performance-test planning move.
